As an exercise

I think to list all of the things growing on my plot, beginning with the plants I have grown myself (planted or sown from seed):

  • a bed of wild garlic

  • cucumbers for pickling

  • climbing / "French" (actually an Italian variety) beans

  • 1 courgette plant

  • a jospa-berry

  • broad beans of two kinds (a regular variety that has been in since autumn and requires poles and string to keep from falling over, and a dwarf variety that does not)

  • nasturtiums among them supposedly to attract the blackfly away

  • garlic

  • a single large cardoon plant, left over from when I grew a row to harvest as an annual

  • a bed of asparagus, yet to produce more than two spears at once

  • first early potatoes

  • white onions and red onions

  • Oregano, mallow, lovage, red-veined sorrel sharing a bed

  • Giant dill from seeds a friend gave me

  • another courgette plant not long for this world

  • agretti

  • a dwarf fig I am growing for its leaves and its scent

  • a dogwood I put in to patch a hole in the hedge

  • and just gone in some seeds of wild fennel and of cucuzza, the serpent-squash of Sicily
